I am a former Head Teacher and Course Director in the UK and Finland. I was born in London and grew up there and in Norwich, in the east of England. I studied at Reading University in England and obtained a B.A (Hons.) degree in 1993. I then studied for an MSc in International Business Economics at the University of the West of England from 1993-94. After a year working in corporate banking in London, I changed careers and studied teaching English as a foreign language at Bedford College. After that I have taught English to children and adults in England, Italy and Finland. I have spent 22 years teaching English, Italian and for the last three years, Finnish in Finland. I have taught over 700 language courses in Finland to both private and public sector clients including many company directors and CEO’s. From 2010 to 2016 I was the Area Head Teacher for one of Finland’s leading language training companies. I have also worked at Summer schools for international students from 1996-2001 and I was a Course Director for courses with around 100 students and 15 staff during the last two years of that period.
My main hobby is chess. I teach chess in Finnish at Tampere schools as a member of Shakkilinna's (Chess Castle's) team. I have coached junior players and adults in England and Finland and my own stepdaughter won 10 Finnish Youth and Finnish School’s Championships and played for the National Youth team. I also coached Ramsey Dairi who won the British Under 12 Championships in 2023. I have been Manager of the Finland junior team at the Nordic Girls' Championships (2017, 2019 and 2022), the European Youth Chess Championships (2014, 2016) and the World Youth Championships (2018).
